The MCVMA Scholarships, Awards, and Grants program drives diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine through access to resources and recognition. We are grateful for key industry partnerships and the generous support of our sponsors to bring these programs to life. Equity in Veterinary Medicine Veterinary Business
Start-up Grant (2021–2023)
Sponsored by
Each year, one recipient received up to $20,000 to help launch or grow a veterinary business.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants were required to:
- Be a veterinarian of an underrepresented or historically marginalized race or ethnicity (e.g., Black, Indigenous, and People of Color — BIPOC)
- Be an active or registered member of the Multicultural Veterinary Medical Association (MCVMA)
Selection Preferences
Preference was given to applicants who demonstrated:
- A commitment to equity, diversity, and social justice for BIPOC communities through involvement in community activities, social groups, and/or organizations
- An interest in providing veterinary care to historically underserved or marginalized communities with limited access to care
- A business concept that addressed a documented need within the veterinary industry
RISE 2021 Conference Awards
This year the Multicultural Veterinary Medical Association (MCVMA) is hosting its first ever Annual Conference themed RISE November 13-14, 2021. With the understanding that the veterinary profession is filled with remarkable and trailblazing individuals and organizations making change in the field of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), MCVMA is offering the opportunity to elevate and recognize these entities.
A total of 4 members/organizations of the veterinary community that exemplify DEI through action will be honored. Applications will be accepted beginning September 8, 2021 through October 7th, 2021. There are 3 award types:
Individual
MCVMA DEI Change Agent Award
A candidate for this award should meet the criteria below:
- Has shown demonstrated commitment to DEI efforts for at least 6 months
- A demonstrated commitment to promoting cultural diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine through contributions that have an impact in their practice or local community
MCVMA Rising Leader in DEI Award
A candidate for this award should meet the criteria below:
- Has shown commitment for at least 1 year
- Has demonstrated commitment to promoting cultural diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine through contributions that may have an impact in any area–college, local area or region, state and/or national arenas
Practice
MCVMA Excellence Award for DEI in Clinical Practice
A candidate for this award should meet the criteria below:
- Has demonstrated a commitment of 2 years
- A demonstrated commitment to promoting cultural diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine through contributions that have an impact in their practice or local community. Examples may include:
- Competitively compensate multi-lingual staff for their contribution or offer translation services for a minimum of 3 languages
- Employ a workforce with diverse socio-racio-cultural backgrounds identifying as Black, Indigenous, or Persons of Color (BIPOC), including BIPOC representation among leadership and credentialed associates
- Host presentations, CE events, community events at least annually that are available to the “public”/external to the practice
Organization
MCVMA DEI Commitment to Change Award
A candidate for this award should meet the criteria below:
- A demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in veterinary medicine through contributions that may have an impact in any area–college, local area or region, state and/or national arenas. Examples may include:
- Played a significant role in the recruitment, development, and retention of pre-vet and DVM students, faculty, residents, and interns from underrepresented or disadvantaged and/or marginalized groups.
- Included and promoted diversity in the veterinary medical profession through the inclusion/infusion of diversity issues in the industry through programs, speaking engagements, and other events.
Each individual winner will receive a $1000 honorarium and free conference registration, while the organization/clinic winner will receive a personalized gift from MCVMA!
